Following your passion / Iterating

A luxury of living in a developed country in the 21st century is the freedom to choose a career or interest you are passionate about. There is no mandate to stick at something you don’t enjoy. However there may be obstacles of debt, commitment, location, time and expertise.

I want to follow my passion in life and make a career around this. Why would I work at something else?

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
– Confucius

But what is my passion?

A gentleman called Abdul created a youtube video with advice for helping you think about what your passion could be.

Interesting video.

If you’re someone with a lot of interests then finding and defining your passion is difficult. The risk there is that you don’t focus on any one thing and instead spend your free time getting distracted (Facebook for instance).

It also may be unrealistic to think you can define a passion now that will be the same in 5, 10, 15 years time.

Instead try out your ideas. Explore your many passions. Listen to the feedback mechanisms that will tell you if you’re heading in the ‘right’ direction. Prepare to fail, and be ready to learn from those mistakes.

Derek Sivers gives a great example of iterating on his about page of 50pop. The story suggests that trying ideas rather than sitting around theorising about them is the way to go.

In summary read passion as passion(s) and… experiment!
